Electrical Panels
When MPUs are needed, accepted brands, locations, and inverter limits by panel size
Factors & Accepted Brands
Panels are only capable of housing so much electricity at a time. Depending on several factors, adding a solar system can require an electrical panel upgrade (MPU).
- Panel Size: 100A, 150A, 200A, 225A, 400A and whether it is standard or “Solar Ready”.
- Brand: Jurisdictions may not allow certain brands that are no longer in business.
- Accepted Brands: Siemens, Square D, General Electric (GE), and Eaton. If not one of these, it will likely require an upgrade regardless of other factors.
- Location: Cannot be in a closet or other enclosure, under a patio, behind a gate or wall, etc. Jurisdictions may require relocation if not compliant.
- Inverter size: Needed is based on system size and determines whether an upgrade is needed.
- Condition: Age, configuration (no fuses), unpermitted breakers/electrical work, etc.
100 AMP electrical panels
Can house up to a 3.8 inverter & 5.7 kW PV system.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗ Tesla ✗ — no 3.8 inverter for 100A; MPU required if selling Tesla
150 AMP electrical panels
Can house up to a 5.0 inverter & 7.5 kW PV system.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗
200 AMP electrical panels
Can house up to a 7.6 inverter & 11.4 kW PV system.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗
225 AMP electrical panels
Can house up to a 11.4 inverter & 17.1 kW PV system.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗
200 AMP (Solar Ready) electrical panels
Can house up to a 19.0 inverter & 28.5 kW PV system.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗
400 AMP
Can house Same as a 200A unless it's a 400A Solar Ready.
If panels are all South facing, the system may experience “clipping”.
What inverters can I use without needing an MPU?
- SolarEdge ✅
- Enphase ✅
- Tesla ✅/✗ Tesla ✔ can be done, but limited function when pairing with a battery (requires Gateway)
